How Do You Help Young People Feel Safe and Stable When They First Arrive at Your Service?
What is supported accommodation?
Supported accommodation offers young people a safe and stable environment, enabling them to develop essential life skills, access support services, and build independence as they transition into adulthood. It’s not just a roof over their head, it’s a place where they receive support with everyday life, from managing routines to accessing education, health services, and emotional support.
We know how important it is for young people to feel safe, settled, and listened to, especially when they’re starting something new. That’s why we begin the support process well before move-in day. A well-planned transition can make all the difference in helping them feel at home and building the trust needed for long-term success.
Preparing Before They Arrive
We always try to begin working with the young person and their care provider as early as possible. Our aim is to understand their needs, routines, support networks, and any anxieties they might have. Where possible, we arrange a gradual transition. This gives us time to learn about what support is already in place and helps us put the right care around them from day one.
A big part of this is giving the young person a chance to visit the accommodation beforehand. They can meet the team, see where they’ll be living, and get familiar with the area. Knowing who they’ll be living with and what the space looks like helps reduce some of the natural worry that can come with a significant change like this.
Building Relationships from the Start
We also assign a dedicated key worker during the transition period. This person becomes a familiar, consistent point of contact who builds a trusting relationship with the young person. When the time comes to move in, they already have someone they know, someone they can turn to for reassurance, guidance, and support.
In the early days after arrival, the key worker meets with the young person regularly, often two or three times a week, depending on their needs. These sessions are a space to talk, ask questions, and settle into their new surroundings at a pace that feels right for them.
Involving Young People in Their Own Care
We make sure each young person is involved in developing their care plan. It’s important they feel that their voice matters and that their choices and preferences shape the support they receive. This helps build confidence and trust, and makes the care more meaningful.
By allowing visits before moving in, appointing a key worker early, and involving the young person in decision-making, we aim to ease anxiety and create a stable start.
